Continuity and Innovation of a Vanishing Textile Heritage

Previous Research Trip – Sognayili, Tamale / Northern Region of Ghana

Nana Opoku

Our journey began here, when Nana Opoku first encountered cotton spinning during a culturally immersive visit to the village of Sognayili. He was struck by the intricate process he witnessed: the transformation of locally harvested cotton into hand-spun threads.

Village Chief Sogwulana explained how cotton spinning has been passed down through generations, deeply woven into the community’s history, economy, and way of life.

This initial exposure sparked the idea of exploring Ghana’s textile heritage and preserving practices at risk of disappearing. The recordings and photographs Nana took became an important catalyst for the eventual collaboration with Karin, offering a window into the everyday artistry and knowledge held by Sognayili’s spinners.
