Interview with Cotton Spinners – Gumo / Northern Region of Ghana

Cotton spinning is an important traditional craft passed down through generations, particularly by women. This activity requires skill, patience, and a sense of rhythm, and is often practiced in groups, giving it both social and economic significance. The spun cotton thread is then used for weaving textiles, including narrow bands that are made into traditional cloth. For a long time, cotton spinning supported local livelihoods but also preserved cultural heritage and identity in Gumo.
