Continuity and Innovation of a Vanishing Textile Heritage

Expert Exchange – Kofi Setordji, Mapong / Ashanti Region of Ghana

Karin Altmann and Nana Opoku

Bolstered by a successful grant and our shared enthusiasm, we visited the town of Mampong to consult with Kofi Setordji, a Ghanaian multidisciplinary visual artist as well as the co-founder and former creative director of the Nubuke Foundation for Contemporary Art and Culture in Accra.

Today, he runs Arthaus in Mampong, a global residency for practising artists, and mentors creative people in Ghana.

We recognized that our project would benefit from engaging with established practitioners who have spent years exploring textile forms. Conversations centered on weaving traditions, techniques, and the historical significance of Ghanaian textiles. This meeting helped us refine our research questions and broaden our perspective on how to preserve cotton spinning within a larger network of textile artistry.
