It documents the diversity of cultural techniques and fields of textile production, the spaces of reflection in the context of teaching art and the variety of artistic practices that artists contribute as teachers. The book positions itself at the intersection of artistic research, pedagogy, and textile studies, offering a multifaceted exploration of how textile practices function as both material and conceptual knowledge systems.

At its core, the book asks a fundamental question: how can teaching be understood “from art” rather than merely about art? This shift in perspective is crucial. The volume frames textiles as a dynamic field of inquiry, where making, thinking, and teaching are deeply interwoven.

One of the book’s strongest aspects is its collective structure. It brings together contributions from numerous artists, educators, and researchers, each offering case studies, reflections, and artistic projects. This polyphonic approach mirrors the very nature of textile production: layered, relational, and assembled from multiple threads of meaning. The reader is not guided through a single authoritative argument but rather through a network of perspectives that challenge linear academic discourse. According to the publisher’s description, the contributions document diverse “textile cultural techniques and fields of production” as well as the reflective spaces emerging within artistic education contexts, highlighting how artists-as-teachers reshape pedagogical practices through their creative methodologies.

A key intellectual contribution of the book lies in its reframing of pedagogy as an artistic practice in itself. Teaching is not treated as a secondary application of artistic knowledge but as an active site of production and experimentation. This perspective aligns with broader developments in artistic research, where process, collaboration, and critical reflection are valued as much as finished works. The book demonstrates how textile-based practices can serve as epistemological tools for understanding the world differently.

Visually and materially, the publication also reflects its subject matter. With extensive illustrations and a carefully designed layout, it embodies the tactile sensibility it discusses. The book becomes an object of material culture in its own right, reinforcing the idea that knowledge in textile art is not purely conceptual but also sensorial and embodied.

With contributions from: Karin Altmann, Mehdi Aminian, Manora Auersperg, Gerald Bast, Marietta Böning, Heidi Call, Danica Dakić, Dobrila Denegri, Ebba Fransén-Waldhör, Susanne Frantal, Flying Carpet, Gangart, Alice Götz, Barbara Graf, Susanne Gobl, Katharina Heinrich, Paul-Reza Klein, Ebru Kurbak, Uli Kühn, Eva Lachner, Walter Lunzer, PRINZpod, Barbara Putz-Plecko, Wilbirg Reiter-Heinisch, Katharina Sabernig, P.
