Continuity and Innovation of a Vanishing Textile Heritage

FLAX AND NETTLE WORKSHOP

KARIN ALTMANN, ALLAN BROWN, AND CHRISTIANE SEUFFERLEIN

The kick-off of the INTRA research project was a Flax and Nettle Workshop in November 2024 at the Angewandte, in collaboration with British artist Allan Brown and Austrian flax expert Christiane Seufferlein.

These fibre processing and spinning activities took place as part of the Open House 2024 and the seminar “FLAX LIFE CYCLE – From Seed to Textile”, with students being the first learning community actively involved in the project.

To reach a wider audience, we chose the Open Day to provide insights into the individual steps of fibre processing and to convey the value of bast fibre plants.
